December 2010 - Update

The school will break for its holidays on Thursday 23rd December and will re-open on Monday 10th January 2011.

Rathgormack N.S. would like to wish all the school staff, pupils and parents a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Christmas Festivities

The school will hold its Christmas Nativity "Hosanna Rock" on Tuesday 21st December at 10 am in Rathgormack church – all are welcome.

Green Flag

We are continuing with our efforts to reduce car journeys to school and hold a W.O.W. day each month. Each week we have the "golden boot" award, which is awarded to the class who has the highest number of pupils who either walked, cycled, car-pooled or parked + stride.  This continues to be a tremendous success and each week we find the children are using the car less and less in order to achieve this prize.

On 12th November the 3rd- 6th class children participated in a very successful "Safer Cycling" initiative which was delivered in the school by the very reputable Limerick company "Safer Cycling".  A very big congratulations to all the children on their outstanding cycling displays.

We also recently held a very hotly contested Bike Art Competition – a wonderful effort was made by all and congratulations to all our prize winners.

Unfortunately due to the recent snow we were forced to cancel our "Green Flag Day of Action".  This will now take place in the New Year, when we will have the privilege of having local hero and international cyclist Sean Kelly, who will lead a short road-cycle.  We also hope to have Garda Slevin and Barry Meehan (World Wide Cycles, Clonmel) along to give road safety and bike maintenance advice.  They will also be joined by Yvonne Kelly, Green Schools Travel Co-ordinator for Waterford County Council.

Sporting and Extra Curricular Activities

The children are enjoying a range to extra curricular activities including swimming, football, rugby and sewing.

Very well done to our girls and boys who participated in both the U13 County Championship and the INTO Mini-Sevens.  Great commitment was shown by all and you did us proud.

A big "Thank You" to all pupils, staff and parents who gave so generously to three very worth while causes – "Team  Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal", the "Children's Medical & Research Foundation, Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin" and the "Carrick-on-Suir & District  Lions Club Annual Christmas Food Appeal.

Recent outings

On Wednesday 10th November as part of Science Week the children of 5th & 6th class visited Waterford Institute of Technology where they enjoyed the "Stardome from the Armagh Planetarium" display.

The 2nd, 3rd & 4th pupils travelled to St. Nicholas Church, Carrick-on-Suir where they saw a wonderful Christmas concert which was hosted by students of Comeragh College.  Proceeds from the event went to "Sudden Infant Death" and "Meals on Wheels".

School Update 10th November 2010

In line with our school's Green School's programme will be having a "Safer Cycling" day on Friday 12th November for the 3rd - 6th class children. It is open to children whether or not they can cycle as the instructors (who have been Garda vetted) will teach the children to cycle.  All bikes and equipment, including cycling helmets will be provided by the instructors.

The cost for this event (€20 per child) will be funded by An Taisce and by the school.  Helmets will be for sale on the day at a cost of €10 per helmet.  (The helmets have a value of €45 and comply with all relevant European Safety Standards).

We plan to have a school cycle led by Sean Kelly in the coming weeks.  All children participating in this will be required to wear a helmet.  So if your child does not already have a cycling helmet those participating in Friday's event will have an opportunity to buy one.

Christmas Nativity

Our Christmas Nativity this year will be "Hosanna Rock" and will be performed in the Church (details of date to follow later).  In preparation for this we would ask if each family could send in a blank CD, so that we can record the nativity songs for the children to practice at home.

School Website

As you can see we Rathgormack National School now has its own website .  The website  acts as a forum for the school to keep parents up-to-date with school activities.  It contains information such as the school calendar/days off, school policies and from time to time we hope to include photographs of school events. The names of the children will not appear alongside these photographs. In line with this, we recently sent home consent slips to each family requesting parents to indicate whether or not the school has permission to use photographs of their children on the website.  We would appreciate it if parents could complete this consent slip and return it to the school.
